Do your gums bleed when you brush and floss? Are your gums sensitive to temperature?
You may have gum inflammation or gingivitis. Gingivitis is an early and highly treatable stage of gum disease, also known as periodontitis. Dr. Shalini Sethi offers periodontal disease treatment to patients in Rosedale, MD.
Periodontal disease treatment is one of the restorative dentistry services we offer to the public. Our dental office helps restore the health of your gums with deep cleanings and other treatments that remove infected tissue and restore your dental health to great condition.
Gum disease is caused by a bacterial infection that, over time, not only affects the gums but also the tooth roots. Although dental cleanings can effectively treat the early stages of the infection, they need to be consistent. This is why we recommend biannual dental visits to our office. Brushing and flossing are often not enough to address the infection at home.
Signs of Gum Disease
There are multiple common symptoms that accompany gum inflammation and gum disease:
- Bleeding gums when brushing and flossing
- Red and purple-tinged gums
- Bad breath (Halitosis)
- Deep gum pockets
- Tender and swollen gums
Please contact our office if you have discovered any changes in the health of your gums. We will help you find the right treatment option to help prevent any further damage to your gum health. It is important to visit the dentist as soon as you find problems with your teeth or gums. Gingivitis is easily reversible with dedicated care and routine cleanings.
Over time, as gum disease worsens, bacterial infection can enter the bloodstream. Any inflammation in the gums can actually affect heart health. Patients with gum disease are more likely to develop heart disease or experience a stroke or heart attack.
Treating Gum Disease
Dr. Sethi offers deep cleanings treatments to help reverse the effects of gum disease on the teeth and gums. These treatments include:
Cavitron
We provide treatment with the Cavitron to help remove infection-causing bacteria from the gums. The Cavitron is an ultrasonic, handheld scaler. With the Cavitron, Dr. Sethi can remove plaque and tartar from and beneath the gums. Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that, over time, hardens to form tartar.
It is more difficult to remove tartar from the teeth and gums with simple brushing and flossing. However, Dr. Sethi can remove this buildup to prevent gum recession and tooth loss. If the plaque and tartar are not removed from the gums, the gums can recede and permanent teeth can fall out.
Perio Protect Perio Trays®
Our dental office uses the Perio Tray® by Perio Protect to fight against gum infection. This non-invasive treatment uses tightly-sealed, custom-made trays to apply antibacterial medication underneath the gum pockets. Perio Protect can make it easier to maintain gum health after infection or if you have chronic gum disease.
This FDA cleared periodontal treatment is able to prevent bacteria from taking hold below the gum line where it can cause significant damage to the gums and tooth roots over time. This goes above and beyond brushing and flossing which can only reach surfaces that you can see.
Perio Protect is the solution for complete gum health and protecting the integrity of your teeth. To create the custom-made trays, we take dental impressions. We send these impressions to a dental lab. Once the trays are complete, we will show you how to apply the prescription medicine in the trays.
